PSO oboist Maxine Edgar has received the 2024 Isbister Memorial Fellowship – an award set up to recognise promising young musicians in our orchestra, to encourage a future for them in music.
Fellowship recipients may receive mentoring from the orchestra, are exempt from subscription fees and are given funding for tuition or other costs associated with their instruments.
The fellowship was set up in 2015 in memory of Joe and Eleanor Isbister – they founded the orchestra in 1972.
Maxine has played with the PSO for several programmes (both as 1st and 2nd oboe) and gave a very creditable solo performance of Marcello’s Adagio with us in 2023.
She is a Year 13 student at Marist College and has studied with both Martin Lee and Alison Jepson. This year she gained academic entry to the Auckland University Young Scholars programme and is currently studying Performance with Bede Hanley.
Maxine has won awards in the National Band Competitions and the Chamber Trio she plays in has done well in the National Chamber Contest. She is also part of the NZ Youth Symphonic Winds and West City Youth Concert Band.
Maxine previously played the cello and is an accomplished pianist.
Something of an all-rounder, she has done well academically (particularly in Calculus and Physics) and plays competitive badminton. Maxine is passing on her talents and skills to younger students by coaching badminton and teaching keyboard.
Congratulations Maxine, and all the best for the future!
